The Knitting Circle is showing at Cochrane Theatre on 21-22 September

The End of an Era: Cochrane Theatre’s parting shot will premiere Vital Xposure’s The Knitting Circle’, exposing the hidden stories of Britain’s madhouses.

The Knitting Circle gives us a chilling glimpse into the secret world of the asylums closed in the 1980s. Written from the authentic testimony of survivors, this production is a celebration of the irrepressible human spirit.

Directed by Paulette Randall and based on extraordinary stories of survival, this is an exploration of the betrayal of thousands lost inside the system. 'Persons fit to be removed'- cast out of sight on the fringes of society, were all these people truly Mad, Bad and Dangerous?

Vital Xposure launched in January 2011, a bold new production company operating under the creative leadership of Julie McNamara that sets out to expose hidden voices with extraordinary stories to tell.

‘A Brilliant play, The Knitting Circle… some amazing and moving stories that need to be told.¬† So much heart and nuance and visceral pain’
Pratibha Parmar (Filmmaker)

'A powerful and well-crafted piece. Very poignant... great writing’
Sue Williams (Arts Council England)

Alan Clifton, Caroline Parker, Deni Francis, Hazel Maycock, Mandi Symonds, Penelope Freeman and Vincent Jerome are in The Knitting Circle @ Cochrane Theatre, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September 2011, 8pm

All performances BSL interpreted by Hetty May Bailey.
Audio description by Pauline Brandt on Thursday 22nd September.
